Both the Three-Day and Five Day Programs are for the complete age range of preschoolers. The Five Day Program includes lunch.
This program is designed to nurture the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development of young children. Emphasis is on self-esteem, creativity, choice making and fun. In our superbly-equipped facility, a professional staff provides each child with a wide array of language activities, arts, crafts, dramatic play, blocks and other creative movement activities. The Preschool Day Care Program combines the YMCA Preschool Program with excellent before and after preschool care. From 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon, all preschool child care children participate in the regular Preschool Program. This program provides an extension of the Preschool Program offering enrichment activities geared to the preschool themes. We offer meals, snacks, rest time and additional outdoor play. The children will spend their day in a splendidly-equipped facility inside and out with loving, skillful teachers who are committed to working with parents to provide the best environment for preschool-age children. Discovery Place is a distinct Child Care Program, geared specifically to the needs of school-age children. A typical afternoon would include supervised homework, tutoring vigorous activities, board games, arts and crafts, with the opportunity to develop skills in working on special projects such as model building, woodworking or needlepoint. Swimming and field trips are a special part of the program. Children are grouped by ages so that the activities and atmosphere will meet the changing needs of growing children. The staff takes seriously their job of helping children develop responsibility, learning to get along with others, and feeling good about themselves.
Transportation will be provided to and from school for children attending John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary, Altavista Elementary, Altavista Middle School to the Altavista YMCA. Students from Rustburg and Brookville Middle Schools are eligible for the program and are bused to and from the elementary school. Full Child Care is available on holidays, snow days, teacher workdays, and during the summer. On those occasions when schools are closed due to inclement weather, Discovery Place children must bring a lunch from home. If the center is open on snow days, parents are responsible for payment of these days even if children do not attend.
